Kwanzaa Gets Creative

Today starts the festival of Kwanzaa.  I think it’s important to be aware all the different holidays this season. This year, I am learning about Kwanzaa!

Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday which celebrates family, community and culture. Celebrated from 26 December thru 1 January, its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa from which it takes its name. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili, a Pan-African language which is the most widely spoken African language.  For more information on Kwanzaa please click here!

Also, there is a locate Kwanzaa festival. Kuumba celebration (which is the 6th day of Kwanza focuses of community and creativity ) takes place 7:30 p.m. Friday at the South Dallas Cultural Center, 3400 S. Fitzhugh Ave., and features live drumming, a candle lighting ceremony and plenty of food. Admission is free. Call 214-671-0058. Don’t worry I will remind you guys on Thursday.
